Objective: A creative, interesting job designing and implementing new hardware and/or software in the electronics, computer, I.T. / D.P., communications, or similar field.

Job Related Experience:

1991 - Present: United States Senate Democratic Policy Committee
Position: System Manager / System Programmer
Supervisor: Greg Billings, Larry Benoit, Laura Quinn

Responsibility: Oversee system operations, and provide assistance for three Senate office using PCs, Macintoshes, and networked Unix systems.  *  Develop, maintain and enhance in-house office automation systems.

Accomplishments: Designed and installed DPC's internet web site and a Senate-wide, secure Intranet.  * Designed several TV studio equipment interfaces controlled by browser via web applications.  * Developed and deployed a nationwide networked digital video storage system to replace couriers and overnight shipping VHS tapes across the country.  * Installed, maintained and enhanced a PC/Unix workstation network to replace an aging DG system for office automation applications.  * Automated many monitoring and backup functions which had previously been done by hand.  * Developed free-form data input applications to speed staff data entry. * Automated communications to external computer systems.  * Developed several "stupid cc:Mail tricks" allowing offices to automate their constituent internet e-mail reply process.

1986 - 1991: United Press International, Fairfax VA
Position: Systems Programmer / D.P. Manager
Supervisor: Sandy Sewitch, V.P., Controller

Responsibility: Manage operations, and support accounting and administrative data processing requirements on a network of Unix, Xenix and HP3000 computer systems. * Develop new, and/or enhance existing, applications to support changing administrative needs. * Supervise D.P. staff programmers, operators, and processing schedule.

Accomplishments: Implemented new systems for customer billing, marketing, accounting, and human resources, using Informix RDBMS, including data entry screens, processing, and user reports. * Automated many manually performed "routine" functions, resulting in fewer errors, more timely processing, and greater system efficiency and availability. * Developed automated interfaces to and from outside sources (bank reconciliation, payroll, IRS, ACH), eliminating lengthy, tedious, and error prone manual efforts. * Supervised and participated in the transfer of applications from and to UNIX, HP3000, Pick, VAX/VMS, and networked PC systems.

1981 - 1986: Arens Applied Electromagnetics, Gaithersburg MD
Position: Systems Programmer
Supervisor: Virgil R. Arens, President

Responsibility: Develop new modules for Arens' Presentation Graphics (PG) software package * "Port" PG programs to various computer systems / various operating systems / various computer languages * Provide telephone and on-site support to customers calling with questions and/or problems using Arens' software * Participate in custom contract programming efforts undertaken by Arens.

Accomplishments: Re-wrote several of the programs in the Arens package, adding new features, and reducing execution time and memory requirements * Developed program-independent and machine-independent modules for all programs in the Arens package to lessen portability problems * Added new graphics output drivers to the Arens' PG package for several devices

1979 - 1981: Penril Data Communications Div., Rockville MD
Position: Analog/Digital Design Engineer
Supervisor: Jack Keilson, V.P. Engineering

Responsibility: Project engineer on small standalone projects related to Penril's modem products, including design, breadboard, and debug * Assistant engineer on larger, more sophisticated projects * Interface with Drafting, Manufacturing, and Test departments.

Accomplishments: Designed and implemented an NIST (NBS) DES encrypter capable of operation at 14.4KBPS in full duplex mode * Designed and implemented a Bell 801 compatible automatic calling unit (ACU). * Set up an ATE station for testing incoming custom LSIs * Re-designed an obsolete, MSI based, remote diagnostic unit, using a then current microprocessor implementation, saving two PC boards and 50% of the manufacturing and testing time * Other projects, including test sets, modem and data communications accessories, and optional features for larger modem projects.
